Biography
A love of the music, philosophy and spirit of the Grateful Dead was the basis of the formation of the band in 2008. We have had changes in the line up ever since we began but believe our current roster is the best since we started.

Whitney Pearsall, our lead vocalist, is one of the original members of the band. Music has been a huge part of her life. She was an entertainer at a very early age. She has been the featured vocalist in bands in Maryland and North Carolina.

Rich Saltz, one of our guitar players, is also one of the original members of the band. He draws on his love of the music of the Grateful Dead, having seen over 150 shows. Jerry Garcia's influence is easily evidenced in his playing style.

Sean Geist is the latest in our long line of bass players. He has been involved in many projects in NY and NC. After opening in another band for Better Off Dead, Sean's interest in the Music of the Grateful Dead was piqued. He accepted an offer to join the band in 2016. Sean continues to provide thunderous bass lines which are essential to the music.

Brant Kay plays keyboards and shares the lead vocal responsibilities. He is also an accomplished guitar player. He has played in bands in Virginia, California, New Mexico, and North Carolina. He grew up with the music of the Grateful Dead in his family and it continues to be a vital part of his being.

Jonas McAlarney is the band's resident "Bobby" His understanding of rhythms and counter rhythms is evident in his playing and adds color and texture to the mix. He previously played in They Are Only Mostly Dead based in Wilmington

Lars Hartmann is in his second tour with the band. He has been involved in many projects in the Triangle. He brings a sense of spirit and reckless abandon to the mix. To say it simply, he is a MONSTER behind the kit.

The band's goal is not to present note by note recreations of what the Grateful Dead produced but to pay homage to the music that has affected us deeply.

Biography
Viva la Muerte was born as a fiddle and two guitars back in 2005. After a number of years playing the coffee houses and clubs of Greensboro, VLM expanded their sound and launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to raise $10,000 for their first album, “All the Birds.” The campaign was successful and so was the album. VLM played at Tootsies Wild Orchid Lounge, the world famous stage in Nashville. They toured to Asheville, Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Seagrove, Greensboro, and completed the “All the Birds” tour at The Bright Box Theater in Winchester, Virginia.

Critical acclaim for “All the Birds” came from a number of sources: "'All the Birds' is a great new album that certainly puts most of the boring folk music these days in its place. The album screams with creativity,” said Amplifier magazine. “It's a beautiful piece of work, with pedal steel guitar, mandolin, piano and songs full of love, death and serendipity,” wrote Jeri Rowe of The Greensboro News and Record. Even west coast DJs like David Gans of The Grateful Dead Hour took note of “All the Birds,” Gans saying: “Very nice variety of feels and flavors here. Hearkens back to the '60s in the best possible way. Armstrong's voice brings to mind Jim Morrison but without the false menace."
Viva la Muerte is a spiritual walkabout, from the front porch to the desert to the magnolia, thoughtful music that doesn't forget to have fun. The band seeks to find that place of convergence where borders blur and roots tangle, where Chuck Berry dances with Patsy Cline. As the band says in their song, “Time to Play”: “Love wants everyone to play.”
VLM is made up of storytellers, surveyors, and master potters, artists and artisans with a bold eye for color and craftsmanship. In 2016, VLM again reached out to their fans and again raised more than $10,000 for their second album.“The Eyes of Men” will be released in the summer of 2017. The members of the band are Wes Allen on drums, M.C. Armstrong on vocals and guitar, Will McCanless on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle, and Jared Zehmer on bass.Armstrong played lead guitar and sang lead vocals for the Grateful Dead tribute band, Brother Esau, between 2010-2012 (see sample videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbE8R_mZuvE / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3xJ6yOHB18 ). He was also lead guitarist and contributing vocalist for Jacqui and the Woodsides ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Bh809_zNo ) and, before that, The Coach Allen Band.

Will McCanless, a potter from Seagrove, North Carolina studied classical guitar performance at both Brevard College and Duquesne University. Will has played in many local piedmont NC rock n' roll ensembles including Bigun Mother Nature, Lane Edwards, and Sketchbook. While a member of these groups Will opened for Shania Twain, Uncle Cracker, and Soul Decision, at various venues and events such as The Walnut Creek Ampitheater, Raleigh, NC, The Greensboro Coliseum for the ACC basketball tournament, and The Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. Will also performed at CBGB's in New York City before it shut it's doors in 2008. Will's musical television performances include spots on the Golf Channel and ESPN. Additionally, Will is also an avid Irish musician and plays traditional Irish jigs, reels, and hornpipes. He plays tenor banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar at area piedmont NC venues.
